Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is a period for the duration of the month of May that recognizes and celebrates the contributions, history and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. As part of this month, we would like to uplift youth activists in the community dedicated to combatting climate change while upholding climate justice.

Izzy Laderman: Climate Justice IS Disability Justice

Izzy Laderman (she/her) is an 18-year-old disabled climate activist, survivor advocate, and sex educator based in Duluth, MN. She is the founder of Disability Awareness Around the Climate and works with various different climate groups. Izzy plans to attend the University of Minnesota to study History and aspires to become a History teacher, acknowledging the empowerment that comes with learning our own history. She also serves as a Youth Advisor for a local organization called Program for Aid of Victims of Sexual Assault.

ACE INTERVIEW: ACE Fellow Hakim Evans on Education Induced Activism

Hakim Evans (he/him) is a 22-year-old climate activist and ACE Action Fellow since 2016 based in Far Rockaway, New York. His passion for the environment stems from his previous advocacy for equitable public health infrastructure and the intersections between climate change and public health. Hakim has played a role in various activities that call attention to the climate crisis such as facilitating workshops and training sessions, attending rallies, and high-level events like the UN Paris Climate Change Agreement Ratification Ceremony and the Global Climate Action Summit. He aims to limit the inequalities of marginalized communities through education induced activism with BIPOC youth at the forefront. He has taken part in a variety of campaigns and partnerships that help youth tackle environmental injustice and bring the climate crisis to light. Hakim is currently a senior studying Economics at York College-City University of New York.

Ananya Seelam (she/her) is a freshman at Cornell University studying Computer Science with a concentration in Computational Sustainability — a field that uses computer science to develop models for decision making related to sustainability — and a minor in Inequality Studies. She has been involved in the climate space since she was in high school after having joined the ACE Action Fellowship program. Her experience within the program as well as her work in the climate movement has led her to continue pursuing work with climate activism.

The magazine features dozens of submissions from young people living in 13 states and 4 countries, alongside 2 interviews, ACE Fellowship updates, and resources for climate action.

President Biden: Build Back Fossil Free!

Yesterday, ahead of Earth Day and the Leaders Summit on Climate and in coordination with the #BuildBackFossilFree coalition, the Alliance for Climate Education delivered over 47,000 petition signatures to President Biden demanding that he take executive action to build back fossil free. Collectively, the #BuildBackFossilFree coalition delivered about 300,000 petition signatures yesterday!

Aishah-Nyeta Brown is a Senior at George Mason University studying environmental sustainability with a concentration in climate change and society. She serves as the Creative Director for the environmental justice org Black Girl Environmentalist, where she aids women, girls, and non-binary people in the Black community to find their place within the environmental movement.

Lissie (she/they) is a 17-year-old Afro-Boricua organizer, activist, public speaker, and student at Tampa Bay Technical High School. She is a fellow for ACE and co-hosts their new upcoming podcast Youth Talk Climate. Lissie uses the power of their voice to author op-eds, lead demonstrations, and spark conversations between elected officials and frontline communities on how climate action can take place in the Tampa Bay Area.

As a climate communicator, she works to turn complex climate information into fun, relatable content that’s easy to understand and share with others.
