The Civic Engagement Manager will work to advance the programmatic and strategic growth of the Action for the Climate Emergency (ACE) through implementing ACE’s 501(c)(3) nonpartisan civic engagement program in key priority areas in MN. Great candidates will have some of the skills and experience listed below:

  • You LOVE canvassing. You really really love it. A massive portion of this job is focused on field canvassing and field canvass management, in addition to other direct voter outreach.
  • Experienced in the field, organizing, and or civic engagement. You’ve knocked on doors,  done phone banking, and know the ins and outs of canvassing/direct voter contact.
  • You LOVE interfacing with the public. 
  • You thrive on teamwork and team collaboration in accomplishing voter registration goals. You’ve managed volunteers, and trained up folks to do fieldwork or similar field campaign experience that included optimizing field outcomes.
  • Are goal-driven and goal-oriented

This is a full-time position based locally in Twin Cities, Minnesota. The Civic Engagement Manager will work from home, meet regularly by video chat with ACE team members, partners and youth, and conduct the majority of activities both online and safely in-person for the purposes of running a voter registration program. The Civic Engagement Manager must be available for regular travel within the state, and potentially nationally, to participate in fieldwork, conferences, actions, organizing, events, and to attend staff retreats.  

Essential Functions

Civic Engagement program  management (50%)

  • Managing A.C.E.’s on the ground field operations team that includes Full Time and Contracted staff
  • Prepare (memorize) and then deliver ACE assemblies to schools. Conduct voter registration and Youth Action Team recruitment ask 
  • Coordinating with Civic Engagement Director and  key table partners VR collection sites, events, etc.
  • Managing data and the associated digital tools
  • Doing in-person and digital direct voter contact (state program applicable)
  • Daily progress to goal monitoring
  • Keeping all internal VR trackers updated daily
  • Weekly Reporting on progress to goals to Civic Engagement Director
  • Weekly Civic Engagement team meeting with Full Time and Contracted staff on QC best practices, progress to goals, feedback, 
  • Weekly 1:1’s with Full Time Organizers 
  • Coaching, supervising, and redirecting Organizers’ workflow on an as needed basis 
  • Responsible for the quality control (QC) implementation and QC supervision. *If there is no QC staff member, CEM is responsible for the entirety of QC process for their region.
  • Follow 501c3 compliance in all Civic Engagement field work and representation of ACE during tenure of role. 

Voter contact (40%)

  • Conduct field-based civic engagement work to increase diverse youth participation in our democracy, locally in the state of hire. This may include, but is not limited to:
    • Voter registration canvassing 
    • Voter education
    • GOTV
    • Relational organizing
    • Coordinating and cutting turf with funders and partners
    • Managing data and the associated digital tools
    • Doing in-person and digital direct voter contact
    • Support young people and other volunteers do direct voter contact
  • Ensure voter engagement work is happening year round, during major and non-major election years, and that the work focuses on all levels of government (local, state, federal)
  • Ensure civic engagement work is working to increase turnout among young people, protect the integrity of our elections, and support young people to hold their elected officials accountable
  • Regularly participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of field experiments to measure the efficacy of ACE’s year-round civic engagement work. 
  • Use digitals tools i.e.  Thrutalk, Thrutext, Mobile Commons to send out mass communications to ACE key demographics 
  • Use in-list communications (e.g. text, email) to contact ACE key demographics for the purposes of:
    • Voter registration
    • Voter Education
    • Voter Engagement
    • GOTV activities

Partnership & coalition building (10%)

  • Work closely in collaboration with state-based partners and coalitions to coordinate civic engagement activities and partner on coordinated advocacy. 
    • E.g. state table coordinated advocacy
    • ACE’s national campaigns, replicated locally
    • Other state-based coalition work
  • Represent ACE at state-based civic engagement tables (formal and informal)

Key Responsibilities

  • ACE Civic Engagement Program Management: Directly recruit and manage Civic Engagement Field Organizers, Contracted Field Canvassers for civic engagement work that includes direct voter registration, remote voter registration,and GOTV activities. 
  • Field-based Civic Engagement Work: Regularly lead direct voter contact in the field, both in-person (when safe) and digitally, for the purposes of voter registration, voter education, relational organizing, GOTV, and other relevant civic engagement activities. 
  • Digital engagement and outreach: Write and send emails, text messages, and other communications to state-based youth activists in the ACE Youth Action Network, ACE Action Teams members, and specific demographic groups utilizing ACE digital tools.
  • Conduct ACE assemblies at participating youth institutions: Civic Engagement Manager will work with the Head of Education and Storytelling on a memorization plan of the ACE assembly presentation curriculum and present to an audience of high school students and student groups for the purposes of voter registration and Youth Action Network recruitment.


Required Qualifications

  • 2-3 years experience in civic engagement field organizing—particularly voter registration, and experience leading civic engagement work, including direct voter contact
  • Experience in advocacy work, youth engagement or youth development, preferably with a climate or other social justice focus
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to set priorities, complete work with minimal supervision, and meet deadlines
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and creativity
  • Existing expertise or willingness to master trends in climate education, youth development, youth organizing and the climate movement
  • Awareness of the issues of concern to young people, including climate change and climate justice, and a passion for empowering youth to take action
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to cultivate and manage partnerships
  • Ability and willingness to learn new digital tools 
  • Must have proof of COVID19 vaccinations including booster 

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated competence in supervising a team and managing projects
  • Ability to train and coach youth 
  • Experience in designing and implementing a voter registration campaign
  • Experience with VAN, Thurtext, Thrutalk, GoogleSuite, Hustle or similar software
  • Experience with Salesforce, Mobile Commons, Engaging Networks or similar software

  • Schedule: Full-time 
  • Annual salary range: $55,800-$65,000 commensurate with experience
