ACE INTERVIEW: Ilyas Khan on Climate Impacts, Misinformation, and Action

Ilyas Khan is an 18-year-old Muslim-Latine Climate Activist. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Ilyas was the lead organizer for the Youth Climate Strikes there and helped establish the Western New York Youth Climate Council. Ilyas moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 2020 and has since been an activist with Sunrise Movement Pittsburgh. Ilyas took part in the planning of the March 19th, September 24th and Earth Day Pittsburgh Climate Strikes and other local actions. They have recently helped establish the Pittsburgh Youth Climate Council and are currently working on the House on Fire Studio. Ilyas is a Winchester Thurston alum, and will be attending CMU in the fall.

PRESS STATEMENT: Action for the Climate Emergency Urges President Biden to Declare a Climate Emergency

Yesterday, for the first time, President Biden called climate change what it is: an emergency. Now it’s time for him to back up his words with action. Young people nationwide realize that it’s Now or Never to declare a climate emergency and are taking matters into their own hands to hold elected leaders accountable. President Biden must make good on his commitment and declare a climate emergency to position the full backing of the federal government behind a coordinated effort to address the climate crisis.

ACE INTERVIEW: Franziska Trautmann on Glass Recycling

Franziska Trautmann is a 24-year-old from a small town in Louisiana. She co-founded Glass Half Full (GHF) in New Orleans to recycle glass into sand for disaster relief and coastal restoration. After growing up in Louisiana, a state that is losing land at an alarming rate and faces more and more intense hurricanes, Franziska became empowered to take action to address the climate crisis.

Youth Advisory Board Members Join ACE’s Board of Directors

ACE is proud to introduce the newest members of our Board of Directors, Gemma Gutierrez, and Leilina Patel! If they look familiar, that’s because they are also members of the Youth Advisory Board (YAB). ACE is committed to providing opportunities for youth to be engaged in growth, strategy, and development. We rely on youth leadership for campaign creation, coalition building, and mobilization efforts. After reflecting on our Board of Directors’ makeup, it was evident that to break down the silo between the Board and YAB was to create space for members of YAB on the Board.
