Last September the Environmental Club at Druid Hills Middle School planted vegetables and spices in their school’s 8 bed garden. As the plants grew the students harvested them for salads in the cafeteria, science projects and cooking in the classroom. After the ACE Assembly, on January 31st, 2013, the students decided that they wanted to use their produce for another purpose – feeding their community. This was not a light task and the students worked alongside their Faculty Sponsor, Ms. Sauer, to decide on the date and they type of organization that they wanted to receive their veggies.

On the morning of March 13th, 2013, over 20 students and 3 teachers worked together to harvest 15lbs of collards, kale, cilantro and other green vegetables and prepare them for the donation. Students picked the veggies, washed them and packaged them into large cardboard boxes. Later that afternoon Ms. Sauer delivered the vegetables to the My Sister’s House shelter in Atlanta, Georgia. Pat Walker, the kitchen supervisor for My Sister’s House, was so grateful for the produce. “We will be using this vegetables to feed over 250 mothers and children in our facility!”, said Ms. Walker. As a result of this donation, the students are eager to return to My Sister’s House to teach the children in the daycare how to plant flowers and beatify their environment.
