This is a guest post by ACE Ambassador and Field Correspondent Molly Cleveland, sophomore at Noble High School in Maine. “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” – John Muir.

Noble Earthworks decided that we need to try and recruit more members into our club. Our school has too many students for only 10 of us to be part of the Green Movement. We know that there are students out there who want to get involved in our club, but just haven’t taken the initiative to join. So we came up with a plan!

Vice President Rebecca Cosgrove and myself as ACE Ambassador set out to create an interactive presentation that got people interested in our club and informed students about our fun projects.

We created a powerpoint with pictures of all our current project, and all the projects we plan to do. Current Projects included; an Environmental Conference and Biggest Loser. Projects we plan to do are; a snowman building contest complete with campfire, a library garden, and Earthweek.

After the presentation students wrote down their DOT’s onto recycled pieces of paper that were cut and painted to look like leaves. The leaves were then hung up to create a tree on the wall.

For a hands-on activity students were split into six groups and had a table of recycled materials such as: plastic bottles, old binders, yogurt dishes, shredded paper, etc to build sculptures with. Each team had exactly 12 minutes to create the most original, and creative sculpture they could think of. Among the sculptures were a cat, the Empire State Building, a five story boat, the earth, a peace sign, and a snack mix tower! After 12 minutes, teachers anonymously voted for their favorite sculpture! The winner…..THE FIVE STORY BOAT!!! A chocolate prize was given to the winners and all of the students recycled their sculptures.
