How ACE saved our composting

Here at the Chaboya Green Club, we have a little box dedicated to the process of decomposition, which happens when organisms, namely worms, break down dead organisms and release their nutrients back into the Earth.

Simply put, we use worms for composting. Every meeting, we give our friends everything they need, food, water, and shelter. But we can’t always be at the gardens. And that brings up a problem.

With the winter weather in California being cloudy, foggy, rainy, gloomy and pretty much every other dreary adjective you can think of, our worms get way too much moisture.

Mrs. Schafer, our teacher leader, had the idea of making a lean-to to protect them from the elements. But of course, with funding being as it is in this economy, we didn’t have enough money. So the idea was put on hold and our worms weathered the dismal weather as best they could…

Then our savior came in the form of an email from ACE: an opportunity to apply for 200 dollars for a green project. Our Green Club jumped at the chance and applied for a this grant with the hopes of helping our slimy little friends.

To our surprise, we got the money and purchased tools and the materials to build a shelter. And now our worms have at roof on their heads when the rain pours down.

But that wasn’t enough for our ambitious group. We are now aiming for much…. much bigger things. After petitioning the students of Chaboya, we found a need to purchase bike racks so students can ride their bikes to school instead of jamming up our parking lot with cars.

More to come on our green ambitions in 2011…
