What is one of the biggest hurdles to overcoming climate change?

Lack of understanding about the issue (a big new report from Yale just came about about this in fact) and methods of stopping it.

Well, no longer – because on October 12th, 2010, BLS Youth CAN took action to make sure that wasn’t an issue at Boston Latin School. We held our 4th annual National Teach-In, a day dedicated to learning about climate change. Not only were teachers in all subjects and grade levels encouraged to teach about it, but we also held fun educational assemblies on that very topic.

Last year, we invited ACE to come and give their educational presentation at the assembly in celebration for the National Teach-In, and at the Youth CAN Block Party (our event for the International Day of Climate Education). The response from the students was so overwhelmingly positive – a lot of them said it got them inspired! – that we invited them back again this year.

And instead of holding one assembly this year, Rouwenna Lamm and Alan Palm respectively presented to six grade levels in 5 separate assemblies.

After the Assembly, Youth CAN members performed a segment about all the major initiatives being done in school. We had a funny skit about the new Zero-Sort Recycling Pilot, a Q&A session, and announcements about upcoming events like the Youth CAN Sustainable Food Fair and a poster competition to promote student-led gardens.

A friend of mine came up to me afterwards and said she thought the entire assembly was fun, memorable, informative, and inspiring.

It wasn’t what she was expecting but she really liked it. The entire day was a great success, thanks in large part to the ACE presentation.
