Amidst the holiday craziness, we asked our mobile subscribers what items topped their green holiday wish list. We received over 1,400 responses and had a very difficult time choosing just three to win our holiday contest and receive their green item of choice. Read on to see what our winners asked for and how they are reducing waste, making their schools more energy efficient, and greening up their transportation with their prizes.

(847) Reusable bpa free plastic water bottles for our indoor track team

From the winner: I chose to ask for reusable BPA free water bottles for my indoor track team as my green wish because our coaches always stress the importance of drinking enough water throughout the day, so I figured if everyone on our team would have water bottles we could stay hydrated for meets and practices without having to go through many water bottles. Also, they’d be cheaper for our team since we could refill them for free at drinking fountains instead of having to buy bottled water all the time.

(707) I wish I could have 3 smart strip power strips that reduce computer power waste for my computer class

From the winner: I decided on smart power strips because we have a lot of computers and appliances that are constantly plugged in at my school. I figured that it would save our school some energy.

(434) Snowshoes to walk in instead of a car. Green and safe

From the winner: I chose snowshoes because I used to live in Alaska so I rode the school bus with snowtreads and I thought to myself that well it put off so many carbon emissions because it pulled harder but drove slower that it didn’t do any good to ride them since they are harming the environment. So one day me and my friends decided that we would walk to school so we did but almost 3-4 feet of snow fell and wearing only boots we sunk deep. So we decided to make makeshift snowshoes since we didn’t have enough money for three pairs after we made them we used them until they broke unfortunately we still had a week left of school so we didn’t mind the sinking feeling after two days. Now I live in Virginia and we don’t get as much snow but we still get a lot of snow and I walk to school in my snowboarding boots which is hard but I pull through whenever it snows.
