The Peoples Climate Movement (PCM) released the following statement today in solidarity with immigrant communities. As a member of the PCM, ACE wholeheartedly endorses this statement and stands in solidarity with immigrant communities:
“The cruelty of the Trump Administration’s immigration policy and its opposition to solutions for the climate crisis are deeply linked. Climate change is a direct cause of the devastating droughts in Central America that are one of the conditions driving thousands of people north to the U.S-Mexico border out of desperate need. Rather than face the problem our nation has caused as one of the globe’s largest carbon emitters, the Trump Administration is responding with policies based in nationalism, white supremacy and fear that will tear families here in the U.S. apart. The immigrant community is a tremendous economic and cultural strength to our nation, not a threat. And injustice is a cause of our nation’s economic inequality, not a solution to it.
The Peoples Climate Movement stands with the immigrant community and with concerned Americans in deeply condemning the Administration’s planned raids on immigrant families. We will work with our partners and allies in the immigrant community in support of our shared mission for bold solutions to racial, economic, immigrant and climate injustices.”
The Peoples Climate Movement brings together people and organizations to support and build a powerful grassroots movement rooted in racial and economic justice that can catalyze a just transition to a 100% clean energy future. It grew out of the historic convergence of diverse national environmental and social justice organizations that orchestrated the massive Peoples Climate March that took place in New York City in September 2014. Since then, the coalition has organized hundreds of thousands of people around a climate agenda from across communities and movements.
