Turning Footsteps Into… Energy?

How cool would it be if every time you took a step, you were making energy? Pretty cool, right? Thanks to PaveGen, a clean technology company located in London, England, that could now actually happen.

PaveGen literally converts the kinetic energy that is created from your footsteps in to renewable, usable energy. I know it sounds crazy, but the PaveGen is actually made up of some pretty advanced technology. The actual tile is made out of 100% recycled rubber and the base is made from 80% recycled materials. It is home to a luminaire that glows when it’s stepped on. This starts the renewable generation process. This sends burst of energy to nearby appliances such as public lights, maps and advertising. There is also a battery underneath the rubber to store the energy for up to three days. They are designed to be used in high foot-traffic urban areas and can withstand harsh external environments.

Check out this video to see PaveGen in a school in Kent, England:

As if these rubber devices weren’t cool enough, their first commercial application is for use at the 2012 London Olympic stadium. 20 tiles will be placed between the stadium and the newly opened Westfield Stratford City mall. The mall alone is estimated to host 30 million customers in its first year, which, according to PaveGen’s prototype developer Laurence Kemball-Cookwill create enough energy to power half of the mall’s outdoor lighting. Woah.

The tiles are a true example of the power of everybody doing one small part because each individual footprint only creates enough energy to light the average LED powered street light for 30 seconds. However, with lots of footsteps they will be able to keep the light lit for even longer. Plus, the cool shape and the fact that they glow will be enough to keep people stomping on them all day long!

Check out PaveGen’s website and CNN’s article on them for more information.
