Alright guys. It’s day 2 of energy auditing here at ACE’s headquarters in Northern California for the Biggest Loser: Energy competition. Yesterday we checked to see how many hours per day our office lights were on and came up with the amount of C02 our lights were emitting per day. Now it’s time to slay those nasty energy vampires. Here we goooooo!

First I scoped out the ACE offices and saw that we have a LOT of computers. Each employee has a laptop computer, and most of us are on them all day and never fully shut them down! This means that all of our laptops combined emit a total of 9.4 pounds of CO2 per day. Wow. Then comes the chargers for these laptops. We are guilty of leaving them plugged into the outlet even when we are not actively charging our computers, so combined our chargers, on average, emit 10.2 pounds of CO2 per day. A bunch of us also hook up a separate monitor to our laptops so we can work on a few things at once, and sometimes we are guilty of keeping those plugged in to. So we on average emit 9.2 pounds of CO2 per day from those along. How did I get all of these numbers? I simply plugged in the number of devices, watts, and hours each is on “active,” “sleep mode” and “vampire mode” per day in the Biggest Loser Carbon Calculator. The math was done for me, which is a definite plus because I strongly dislike doing math.

Now we are ready to submit our First Weigh-In Results. I was totally surprised by how much carbon just those electronics emit. Even green experts like us have to check to see what are own impact is.

Have you started the competition yet? If not, get started today!
