Wearable waste

Stop and think for a moment.

When was the last time you saw someone wearing an outfit made of objects we throw out on a daily basis?

I have a hard time with this question, as do most people. On a daily basis, we toss objects into trashcans, and hopefully, recycling bins. On a daily basis, how much we truly waste is not a common thought pondered.

Well, I wanted to make people think about waste. I didn’t, however, want to say “You’re doing this wrong.” Not to mention, who wants to listen to a boring presentation?

I knew it needed to be fun; then, it hit me: a Green Fashion Show.

With a Green Fashion Show, contestants and audience members will have fun. While having fun, they will learn about the impacts we have on the environment. Then, we can help people learn about how to reduce that impact.

In the end, as people shuffle out of our marine themed fashion show, I hope they see that wasting impacts more than just Sanford and that small changes will make a large difference. On top of this, I want people to realize that we don’t think they’re doing anything wrong, and we’re here to help them make these changes fun. Changing habits to reduce impact isn’t meant to be a chore. Plus, when a lot of people change one habit, and Do One Thing, it reduces our impact greatly.

Want to organize a Green Fashion Show for your school? Stay tuned for updates about the planning of Sanford’s Green Fashion Show, as well as the event itself, in upcoming blog posts from Jen and her teammates here on Hot and Bothered.
