By Amulya Yerrapotu, student at Chaboya Green Club
At home, I have a huge bin full of batteries. They have outlived their usefulness. And I can’t drive. So they collected, pooling together like sediment from a creek, until I could barely lift the container. This is a dilemma that many busy families face.
There’s really no point in driving to a center to recycle two batteries. And of course, batteries, and CFLs, are terrible for the environment if they are not properly disposed of. So the Chaboya Green Club decided to do something about it.
We decided to host a battery/ CFL drive. For two weeks, students had the chance to bring dead batteries and burned out CFLs to their 4th period class for a chance to win an ice cream party. We had two collection days, where members of the leadership class collected the batteries and brought them to Mrs. Schafer’s classroom.
The drive was a HUGE success. The winning class brought in over 600 batteries alone! Our final count totaled at 3,000 batteries and 95 CFLs!
We decided that each DOT would be worth 15 batteries or 2 CFLs. That left us with 248 DOTs. The drive was another successful DOT to add to our slowly growing list. Our DOTs so far include, recycling bottles, walk to school week, reusable water bottles.
Members of the Green Club recently put together a movie about all of our campaigns (Excluding the Battery drive) so far. Watch and enjoy!
Thank you!
