Kaniyah is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina and has lived there all of her life. She goes to Chapel Hill High School and is in the 9th grade. She is passionate about climate change and believes it is something everyone should know and care about. Kaniyah is part of a generation that doesn't really know much about climate change and maybe doesn't even care because they feel like it is not up to them to solve. She believes climate change is something everyone should help stop.
Kaniyah believes that the most important part of climate action is systemic change by elected leaders. She believes that if leaders do not believe or fully understand climate change, then nothing will be done to stop it and nothing will be put in place to keep it from getting worse.
Kaniyah thinks that educating young people can really make a difference because they are the future leaders. Kids and teens are the people who are going do great things in the world and hopefully one of those things will be helping fight against global warming. Kaniyah is looking forward to getting to meet other teens who are just as passionate about climate change as she is. She is also excited to learn about how we as a state are doing as far as renewable energy goes.
Kaniyah first became interested in these issues when she went to a summer program last year about climate change and all the renewable energy we could be using. The program really explored global warming and how it is important for everyone to know what it is and how it can be stopped or slowed down. In that moment, Kaniyah realized that she wanted to learn more about climate change and what we can do to stop it. Kaniyah’s personal goal for working in climate action is to educate more people about what climate change really is and how they can help; she wants to use the knowledge she has gained to educate and encourage others to get involved as well.
In her spare time, Kaniyah enjoys cooking, baking, swimming, playing soccer, and learning about biology.
